Local SEO for Home Service Contractors: Why You’re Not in the Google Map Pack (And How to Fix It)

Local SEO for home services contractors starts with a simple test: open Google on your phone right now and search your main service plus your city — “roofing contractor Tulsa,” “AC repair Tampa,” whatever applies to you.

Three companies show up in a box with a map above them. That’s the Map Pack, and to a homeowner with a leak or a dead compressor, those three results are basically the entire internet. Almost nobody scrolls past them.

Now scroll down. Keep scrolling. There you are — position seven, with a 4.9 rating and reviews going back to 1994, sitting below a company founded in 2018 with a 4.3.

Here’s the part that should annoy you: that company isn’t better at the work than you are. It’s just giving Google more to work with — which is the entire premise behind local SEO for home services contractors: making the invisible signals visible.

Google Can’t Tell How Good You Are

That’s the whole problem, and it’s a strangely liberating one once you sit with it. Google isn’t judging your craftsmanship. It can’t. It has no idea whether your flashing work is clean or your ductwork is sloppy. All it has are signals — mechanical, checkable, mostly free signals — and most contractors are handing over almost none of them.

Google is public about how local rankings actually work. Three factors decide it:

  • Relevance — how well your profile matches what someone typed
  • Distance — how close you are to the person searching
  • Prominence — how well known and well reviewed you are

Only one of those is fixed. You can’t move your shop closer to downtown. But relevance and prominence? Those are entirely in your hands, and most contractors have simply never picked up the tools to work them.

The Gap Is Never Where You Think It Is

We audit these businesses for a living, and the pattern repeats in almost every market: the oldest, most respected name in town is quietly invisible online, while three of its size and reputation are eating its calls. It’s rarely one big failure. It’s a stack of small, boring gaps:

  • A Google Business Profile with the wrong primary category, half-empty services, and no photos newer than three years old
  • A review count that’s a fraction of the competition’s, with nothing new added in months
  • A homepage that lists ten cities served — and a website with a dedicated page for exactly zero of them
  • A contact form missing a name field, silently generating nothing for weeks
  • A phone number that isn’t visible on a phone without scrolling (in Florida, in August, on an HVAC site)

None of that is a pricing problem or a hiring problem. It’s an invisibility problem. And invisibility, unlike craftsmanship, is fixable in an afternoon.

The Good News Is Boring, Which Is Why It Works

You don’t need a rebrand. You don’t need to become a better contractor than you already are. You need to stop leaving free ground uncovered — because nearly every ranking signal that matters is mechanical, checkable, and doesn’t cost anything to fix.

That’s the whole idea behind the 50-Point Local Map Pack Scorecard we built for home service contractors: roofing, HVAC, plumbing, solar, remodeling. Fifty checks across five sections — Google Business Profile, reviews and reputation, local pages, website conversion, and the unglamorous tracking stuff nobody wants to look at. One point each. No half marks, no benefit of the doubt. If the form “works, I think,” that’s a zero, because the whole point is finding the gaps, and you can’t find them by being generous with yourself.

It takes about 40 minutes. You’ll need a laptop, your phone, and your Google Business Profile login. At the end, you get a number out of 50 and a plain-English list of exactly what to fix, in order.

What We Won’t Tell You

We won’t tell you that a scorecard fixes a business customers genuinely don’t like. Marketing amplifies whatever’s already there — if your reviews are honest and poor, more visibility just means more people reading them.

We also won’t tell you to run out and spend on Google Ads before you’ve covered the free ground. That’s a different question with a different answer, and it almost always depends on how much of this scorecard you’ve already done. Paid traffic landing on a broken form or an invisible profile is money set on fire.

Start Here, in This Order

If you run through the scorecard yourself, don’t try to fix all fifty points in a weekend. Order matters more than the list:

Four-week local SEO roadmap showing steps to fix website issues, optimize Google Business Profile, build reviews, and create local service pages.

  1. Week 1 — Stop the bleeding. Anything on your website costing you a lead today: phone number visibility, a tested contact form, placeholder text gone.
  2. Week 2 — Take the free points. A full pass of your Google Business Profile — categories, service areas, services, photos, your first post in months.
  3. Week 3 — Build the review engine. A written process, a direct review link, a 24-hour request trigger after every finished job.
  4. Week 4 — Start the pages. Three real city pages, with real local proof, for your three biggest markets.

Score yourself again in 90 days. That comparison — your number then versus your number now — will tell you more than any report an agency sends you.

Or Let Us Score It for You

If you’d rather not spend the 40 minutes, send us your website and your city. We’ll record a short video walking through your Google profile, your top three local competitors, and the specific, named gaps between you — the same fifty checks, done for you. No cost, no obligation, and no pitch inside the video.

If it’s useful, we’ll talk. If it isn’t, keep the video.

You’re not losing to better contractors. You’re losing to better checklists. That’s an easy problem to have.
